World Skills UK at Bedford College

Selected Bedford College students and staff received special training in coaching and vocational competitions to challenge students, boost their confidence and raise their performance to World Skills standards.

Full-time students in hairdressing, care and business areas of vocational education at the college received coaching from World Skills competition coaches and feedback during intensive one-day masterclasses on Friday June 14th.

Flitwick student Rachel Minihane, aged 18, came top in the World Skills Coaching class for hair - here she is pictured with her winning creationSue Blackman, Centre for Creative Arts Director, who successfully bid for an the opportunity for staff and students to learn from experienced coaches who support students in the UK World Skills competitions said:

World Skills competitions have been established for many years and symbolize excellence in vocational training. They attract competitors from all over the World to demonstrate very high standards in vocational skills. The aim of the Institute for Learning/World Skills masterclass programme is to provide encouragement, guidance and training for teaching staff to embed ‘skills competitions’ in vocational learning and enable students to develop the confidence to demonstrate their skills in a highly competitive environment. These events will also enable them to develop a competitive edge in the marketplace when they seek employment.”

The training, assessment and judging took place at 25 Restaurant (5th Floor College Tower Block). All students who took part received a certificate of achievement from Institute for Learning/World Skills UK.

* Earlier in the year Bedford College students reached the UK semi-finals of the WorldSkills UK Accounting Technician competition 2013. Held at the AAT office in London the team competed against the top 18 teams from all heats.

* Three IT Networking & Security Foundation Degree students took part in the Cisco Network Technician category – taking second and third place awards.
