Highlighting success

From apprentice to salon owner is the dream route for many young people entering Hair and Beauty studies.

Bedford College offers excellent paths into employment via its High Street training salon, BROOKS. There teenagers can learn the skills to put them on the stairway to success, as demonstrated by Charise Goodwin.

After completing an apprenticeship, Charise took an advanced qualification in hairdressing and then sought out the Prince’s Trust for help in setting up a salon. She decided against a loan, but accepted business training and mentoring to help her through the first months of opening Luciana’s in Castle Road, Bedford.

“Bedford College and the staff were massively helpful in every way, and very encouraging. Now I am hoping to take on an apprentice of my own,” said Charise, aged 23, who works with her younger sister, Steffi and mum, Theresa.

Luciana’s specialises in wedding hair and Charise and her team take part in wedding fairs to meet brides-to-be.
